Further Education vs Industry Recognised Computer Training
When he first came to power, Mr Blair proudly stated his party’s big focus was “Education, Education, Education. A worthy enough focus and obviously not an area a person would think of associating with frustration and growing personal debt. But over the years, as greater numbers of institutions have acquired the status of a university, and student loans have become effortlessly available to all, schools have encouraged many more young people to go for higher education without actually spelling out the cost.
There’s no doubt that we should have a much more educated society, but is everyone often obtaining the most appropriate advice? In reality; it’s not a hard sell to persuade the youth of today to leave the family home and live with mates, not worry about obtaining a job for three or four years and get discounted beer at the university bar. A bit of a basic interpretation perhaps – inevitably there’s a bit of lessons to attend, and a degree of juggling to make ends meet, then the rewards will be worth it in years to come. Or will they? For a great deal of families, the real price of university education continues for many years after graduation, both in social and financial terms.
Student Loans (the best method of borrowing for university undergraduates), fees for tuition, accommodation and general costs of living over the course duration can set you back well into five figures – with no guarantee of work. It’s to nobody’s amusement that intellectual adolescents too often become back-at-home twenty-somethings who haven’t even conquered their first job. Not only do fathers and mothers still have to support them financially, but frustrated adult children in the house again can obviously cramp their style!
Formal education can be a fulfilling experience for young people, and is the only road for many of our professions. But advisors and families ought to know that in some subjects, there are other, sometimes superior alternatives. In the computer industry, employers are crying out for commercially qualified IT professionals. Those who’ve been to University often end up having to supplement their computer training skills to be ready for work and compete in the job market with Microsoft, CompTIA or Cisco professionals. The sad fact is they would have saved themselves three years and not had a five figure debt if they’d studied with a commercial interactive computer training provider. Perhaps the beer in the college bar isn’t such a great idea after all – it’s true the family coffers would be a lot less depleted, and life would be lot more comfortable for all.
